 The literature on immigration to the United States generally explains
 that it is not the poorest of the poor who make the journey (see
 Alejandro Portes and Ruben Rumbaut's IMMIGRANT AMERICA: A PORTRAIT, pages
 10-12, for example). Moreover, as Alex Stepick writes, "Haitians do not
 immigrate to the United States randomly as separate individuals, each
 independently deciding to migrate. Instead, as Laguerre (1984) and
 Fjellman and Gladwin (1985) have demonstrated, Haitian families organize
 immigration" (PRIDE AGAINST PREJUDICE: HATIAINS IN THE UNITED STATES, p.
 16). Therefore, it is safe to assume that much of the cost for boat
 travel to the United States of the Bahamas is covered by migrants'
 relatives in the North America Haitian diaspora.
