 Harlem artist's work displayed

The Carl Van Vechten exhibition at the Main Library during Black
History Month will feature artist Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence was the first
of the Harlem artists to gain acceptance in the established New York art
world. In the late 1930s, while still in his teens, Lawrence created
his first narrative series about a black hero, Haiti's liberator,
Toussaint L'Overture. The 18 limited-edition silk-screen images of
Lawrence's early paintings that are part of this exhibition were created
at the Washington Workshop with the Amistad Research Center. These works
are presented with memorabilia of Haiti's political and social history
along with the work of Joyce Scott, Yvonne Tucker, Florencio Gelabert,
Charo Oquet, Fred Eversly, Jean Claude Rigaud and Edouard Duval
Carrie, who have all been inspired by Toussaint's struggles.
The Jacob Lawrence feature ``Telling the Story of Toussaint
L'Overture'' will be on exhibit at the Miami Beach Main Library in the
Second Floor Exhibition Area through March 30. The Main Library is
located at 101 West Flagler Street. Call 305-375-5576 for more
information.
