MINUSTAH VICTIMS CRY "JUSTICE, REPARATION"
http://www.hurah.revolt.org/

by Tom Luce with
AUMOHD Pres. Evel Fanfan

On May 3, 2006 while the international press was
elsewhere celebrating International Press Day and
calling for justice for slain journalists, over 200
victims and their families met to demand justice and
reparations for their MINUSTAH inflicted injuries.
After a week's delay because of a lack of logistics
support the much awaited press conference called by
AUMOHD brought out victims in wheelchairs, on
crutches, people without arms, without feet, and
parents whose children are illegally in jail. Several
families brought pictures of loved ones killed by
MINUSTAH.

While the international press was absent, many
national journalists made the effort to come to Cité
Soleil and cover this moving event. The conference
began at 9 a.m. in a classroom of the Cité Soleil high
school. The room was filled with victims chanting,
"Justice, Reparation" in a well organized and
disciplined chorus about their sad but determined bid
for their just cause.

At 11 a.m. attorney Evel Fanfan, President of AUMOHD,
read his declaration to the press backed up by the
refrain of the cries of the victims, "Justice,
Reparation". Fanfan declared that the
Boniface/Latortue regime had established a record of
human rights violations and that MINUSTAH troops had
committed violent acts of abuse against whole
neighborhoods like Cité Soleil and Pele. "AUMOHD
demands justice and reparation for all deaths,
crippling, and property loss." Fanfan cited the
Haitian Constitution, the United Nations peacekeeping
decrees and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
in grounding these demands. In particular these
international conventions call for civilian victims to
be cared for, something that has not been done.

AUMOHD's Fanfan called for the MINUSTAH authorities to
establish a fund for reparations and an independent
commission to investigate these atrocities. In
addition AUMOHD demanded the liberation of all those
illegally imprisoned and the cessation of all
intimidation by MINUSTAH troops against the civilian
population. Attorney Fanfan pointed out that more than
half of the residents from Cité Soleil and Pele have
had to flee their homes to escape the bullets of
MINUSTAH.

"It was sad, it was moving, listening to the very sad
testimonies. The facts were there, the witnesses were
there," said Attorney Fanfan. The Secretary of the
Community Human Rights Council (CHRC) of Simon-Pele,
Mrs. Garalda DEMESIER, made her very moving and sad
declaration. Then Perancy LAURESTAL, spokesperson for
the CHRC of Cité Soleil made a declaration to the
press. The CHRC's have come into being over the last
two years as a result of AUMOHD's leadership in
building a cohesive citizen' vehicle to resist illegal
acts on the part of the governments, both Haitian and
UN, and to seek justice under the law. The CHRC
movement began first in Cité Soleil as a result of
multiple illegal arrests, mainly of teenagers, and
then spread to GranRavin in the aftermath of the
"Soccer" massacres. Recently in Pele where over 70
teenagers had been illegally arrested a new CHRC was
formed.

The next step will be a demonstration in front of the
MINUSTAH offices demanding justice and reparation for
the victims. AUMOHD is writing a letter to Ambassador
Juan Gabriel Valdes to notify him of its position and
the determined stand of the victims for justice and
reparation.
