29765: Ives (announce): January 7 Haitian Community Meeting with So An in Brooklyn (fwd)

From: K M Ives <kives@toast.net>

On Sunday, January 7, 2006 at 5 p.m., singer, activist and former political prisoner Annette "So An" Auguste will dialogue with the Haitian community at St. Catherine's Church, at the corner of Linden Boulevard and Albany Avenue in Brooklyn.

Guitarist Wilfrid "Tido" Lavaud, So An's long-time companion and collaborator who recently ran for mayor of Delmas, will also participate in the program.

The evening is being held in the framework of the commemoration of January 1, 1804 when Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed Haiti's independence. Berthony Dupont, who recently wrote a book about the true history of Haiti's founder, will make a presentation about the significance of January 1.

A representative of the organization KAKOLA will also present their analysis of Haiti's complicated political situation.

Several artists will make cultural presentations such as dance, poetry and music.

All are welcome. Admission is free.

The groups that endorse this event so far are: the Lavalas Family, Haiti Support Network and KAKOLA.
