To make a long story short., it could be because the family DUPLEIK famous/infamous., notorious!! to say the least was the chief engineer of the French establisment in India,. with his power reflecting all away to the french holdings in the new world..the 'French Antilles' his story is just extraordinary...he died in Paris under Louis de XV after the king of France had recall bck to France and really under a very stupid arrangement gave away their holding in India to the British....he died a poor man in Paris....but to return to your query...He was indeed a brilliant man but a tyrant and a ferocious at that...their is a Medaliion in the Musee du Louvre in Paris a copy of the original I believe that may explain the connection to Haiti...(this is pure speculation but quite possible) he was also a vain man and had a huge banner made of white silk close to 13 feet with a golden sun. in the back of the Medallion that shows the ' Etendard!!' is inscribe with the following 'Moussa fersing debite in loco constitutus' translate to french lousely Muzzafer -Zing nomme au poste merite...anyway at that time when he left India He took with him beside his family and friends a whole cohorts of his guard..and some of them quite logically enroll with the french navy to the new world. They were quite ferocious in their ways....and of course weared a white scarff of silk made from Mazulitapan!! no doubt they end up some of them at least as cheftain of the Plantations in Haiti and elsewhere carrying with them their ways with slaves 'and earlier form of the ' Legion' in Africa ., Algier, Maroc etc....with their special cap and uniform in the sahara....so thus...the Mazulitapan was the only way that the slaves could describe to the Marron what they look like......by the way DUPLEIX died in Paris the 11th of November 1763....later with the help of others and families France finally understood what this was all about restore his name much later ....well it's a nice story that I believe has legs....I compress the story as much as possible to get to your a possible answer...guy
