HAITI DEFEATS PANAMA

MIAMI – Haiti's national team, which has failed to qualify for eight consecutive World Cups, earned an impressive 3-0 exhibition victory over Panama.

Eliphene Cadet scored on a 20-yard, straight-on shot at the 28-minute mark, Fucien Brunel scored in the 53rd minute and Pierre-Roland Saint-Jean made it 3-0 with a goal in the 86th minute. Goalie Gabard Fenelon earned the shutout.

The victory was greeted enthusiastically by a pro-Haitian crowd of about 12,000, who dealt with a rain storm that persisted most of the evening.

The fans saw the Haitians, who made their only World Cup appearance in 1974, defeat a team that has been impressive in the past couple of years.

Panama was the runner-up to the United States in the 2005 Gold Cup and finished second to Costa Rica earlier this year in the UNCAF Nations Cup. Panama beat Colombia in the semifinals of the Gold Cup.
