Letter to the Editor

While the common view is that Haiti is an economic basket case, resulting in
Haitians’ losing their lives trying to flee to the United States (“New Routes
and New Risk to Flee Haiti,” front page, May 19), the Haitian people remain
strong, hard-working and innovative survivors. What prevents economic
development in Haiti is not the will of the people, but the backbreaking debt
accumulated by corrupt dictators over the years, little of which benefited the Haitian
people. If the debt were forgiven, the government would have funds to build
roads, schools and other infrastructure needed for economic recovery. Tom
