Four dead in Haiti flooding
Published on Wednesday, July 25, 2007

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): Flooding in Haiti
triggered by torrential rain has killed at least four
people and destroyed dozens of homes, local
authorities said.

"The victims were found in the water that flooded the
streets of two areas near Port-au-Prince," Haitian
civil protection spokesman Dieufort Delorges said on
Monday.

At least 300 families were affected by the flooding
and dozens of homes had been ruined, according to an
initial assessment by authorities.

Meteorologists are forecasting more rain in coming
days, which could cause flooding in southern areas of
the country. Widespread deforestation in Haiti
exacerbates the effects of heavy rainfall.
