#3508: Aristide on the coming elections (fwd)

From: Max Blanchet <MaxBlanchet@worldnet.att.net>

Jean-Bertrand Aristide

Ancien Président de la République d'Haïti

May 8, 2000

Dear Congressman Gilman:

We take this opportunity to once again thank you for
your continued commitment to the democratic process
in Haiti.

As we approach May 21st, the date set for legislative
elections, Fanmi Lavalas continues to encourage candidates
to address the important issues outlined in our white book,
and to engage the nation in open and democratic dialogue.
We also continue to call for the security necessary
for voters and candidates to participate fully in this important
electoral process. We reiterate our commitment to peace
and condemn all forms of violence that threaten Haiti's
fragile democracy.

In the spirit of December 16, 19990 when delegations
from around the world witnessed Haiti's first free and fair
election, we encourage all supporters of democracy to
once again accompany the Haitian people on May 21.
Given your demonstrated support for democracy in Haiti

we believe that your presence in particular will contribute
immensely in creating a positive environment for the
elections.

We look forward to seeing you in Haiti as the Haitian
people take this important step further in the democratic
process.

Sincerely,

Jean-Bertrand Aristide

Honorable Benjamin A. Gilman
