Customs agents seize 880 pounds of cocaine from Haitian freighter

MIAMI -- (AP) -- The U.S. Customs Service seized 880 pounds of cocaine
smuggled into the country by a Haitian freighter Wednesday, officials
said. Customs agents seized the drugs after they were loaded into a
Ryder rental truck Wednesday morning. The agents had been watching the
freighter, the Dantor, since it docked in the Miami River a week ago,
said Customs Service spokeswoman Norma Morfa.
The agents, along with officers from the Miami Police Department,
followed the
truck out of the port just before 10 a.m. They stopped it across the
street from the
Orange Bowl stadium in downtown Miami, and arrested the Haitian driver,
Morfa
said. Police dogs detected the cocaine, which is valued at $8 million,
said police
spokesman Jorge Pino. The tip came from an intelligence report, Morfa
said. The investigation is ongoing.
