Pro-government Haitians burn tires, demand arrest

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, CANA - Pro-government supporters set up
flaming tire barricades in and around the Haitian capital yesterday to
counter opposition protests against newly elected President
Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

The Aristide supporters also called for the arrest of opposition leader
Gerard Gourgue, who was proclaimed an alternative president of the
Caribbean nation by supporters, private Radio Kiskeya reported. By
afternoon, the ashes of burned tires and barricades built with rocks
blocked several thoroughfares in Port-au-Prince, capital of the poorest
nation in the Americas.
