Washington, CANA - Secretary General of the Organisation of American
States (OAS), Cesar Gaviria, is due to travel to Haiti today. His purpose is
to accompany efforts to establish a "credible, independent and neutral"
Provisional Electoral Council, a statement from the OAS said.

Gaviria's visit is in keeping with an OAS General Assembly resolution,
"Support for Democracy in Haiti," that was approved at the 31st Regular
Session in Costa Rica on June 5. He will be accompanied by the Assistant
Secretaries General of the OAS and the Caribbean Community, as well as
by Ambassador Sergio Romero of Mexico, the newly appointed Special
Representative of the Secretary General in Haiti.
