8545: Question on NY Times Essay on War of Independence: Slavin (fwd)

From: pslavin@unicefusa.org

Re Thomas Bender's essay in Sunday's Times' "Week in Review" section, "The Age
of Revolution: Founding Fathers Dreamed of Uprisings," (and hats off to the
Times for publishing it) Benders writes that diplomatic relations were
established between Haiti and the US in 1862 -- it was my understanding
relations were formalized after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on
January 1, 1863. Do the historians on the list refer to the New Year's Day or
New Year's Eve date?

Also, does anyone on the list know if in David McCullough's, "John Adams,"
does he write about the Haiti policies of Presidents Adams
and Jefferson?

Lastly, "All over but the Shoutin", the 1998(or so) memoir of Times
correspondent Rick Bragg, includes two chapters on Haiti.
I read them recently -- did not know that his book included Haiti passages.
