On May 2, 1999, The Boston Globe newspaper published the first of a three-part 
series of articles, "STOLEN REFUGE - US is a haven for suspected war 
criminals'", by Steve Fainaru.  


In this article, the reporter describes Carl Dorelien, Ex-colonel of the 
Haitian Armed Forces as "once a small-time dictator, and a proud one at that.  
He was part of a clique of military officers who held Haiti at gunpoint until 
1994, when the junta's abuses became so grave that the Clinton administration 
dispatched 20,000 troops to the tiny Caribbean nation to restore order."  As if 
this publication was not damaging enough, the same Steve Fainaru wrote, in the 
February 15, 2000 edition of The Boston Globe, another article stamped, "New 
pursuit seen on War Criminals living in the U.S.A."


Carl Dorelien did not answer those allegations at that time because his lawyer 
advised him not to do so.  Those articles were viewed as a deliberate act of 
provocation.  And indeed, since the publication of the Globe's articles - full 
of lies, contradictions and assertions without proof - Carl Dorelien became the 
target of a well-organized clique on the Aristide payroll, with the final goal 
to humiliate and destroy him.


As a result, U.S. Representative Mark Foley, a Republican from Port Saint 
Lucie, Florida, said he decided to introduce legislation to the United States 
House of Representatives.  According to the Port Saint Lucie News, "Mr. Foley 
said that he introduced this bill after the Globe reported that Carl Dorelien, 
a former colonel in the Haitian Regime ousted by the 1994 U.S. invasion, has 
been living quietly in his district ..."


On Thursday, June 21, 2001, four INS agents arrested Carl Dorelien at his 
residence in Port St. Lucie, and incarcerated him at Krome, awaiting 
deportation to Haiti.  Furthermore, on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, Mr. Dorelien 
was transferred to a Key West, Florida high security jail, where they treat him 
like the worst criminal.  The detention condition is very alarming for Mr. 
Dorelien's health, as he is a diabetic and suffers from hypertension and 
stomach ulcers.


As a well-known, respected and independent newspaper - and for the sake of the 
truth - we trust that The Boston Globe will relate the facts, pure and simple.  
We hope that the Globe will publish the real truth to bring justice to an 
innocent man - deeply respected by those of us who already know that truth - 
and to repair the damage that the media has done to him.
