Haitian leaders to push for more seats

Haitian-American leaders will urge the Miami-Dade County Commission today to
create two new districts, including one that could benefit a
Haitian-American candidate. Jean-Robert Lafortune, president of the
Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition, said one of the proposed districts
would be comprised of Little Haiti, North Miami and North Miami Beach, which
have large Haitian populations.

Such a proposal -- which would increase the commission seats from 13 to 15
-- has been tentatively approved by the ad hoc charter review committee and
could go before county voters in a November referendum, he said. At issue is
whether the redistricting plan would be implemented in 2004, as
Haitian-American leaders are urging, or following the U.S. Census in 2010,
as the committee proposes.

Language for the ballot will be discussed at today's Ways and Means
Committee meeting, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in the County Commission
chambers.
