A list of accomplishments of the last few years should include:

1. The many beautful public squares, "places publics" that have been
restored or newly created. I know there are complaints in connection with
some of these but they are a wonderful thing in crowded Port-au-Prince, and
are heavily used, especially in the evenings. They are handsome,
multifunctional and pretty well maintained.
2. The Plage Publique up on the Cote des Arcadins. It is as beautiful as
the private beaches and remains well kept.
3. Telephone company offices have opened in many rural towns that never had
them.
4. New roads in and around the capital are now built with sidewalks, making
them much safer.
5. Quite a few new public schools, especially high schools (lycees) in rural
towns.
6. The school year has been lengthened by several weeks.
7. A larger AIDS education and prevention campaign in the last two years
than was ever seen before, with the President and First Lady playing a key
role. More is needed of course.
