As Richard so rightly points out, Aristide's departure is another of those
pesky - he said, she said - situations. In such cases it is best to ignore
what was said and look at what was done.
Aristide did agree to the Caricom brokered compromise which would have shorn
him of much of his power in exchange for protection to complete his mandate.
He can only have done this because he believed that without foreign
protection he would be overthrown (and maybe killed) by armed rebels. What
was left other than departure when the 184 refused the deal and the
Americans refused to guarantee his safety?
