Perhaps one should know what percentage of Haitian land area is arable as 
compared to what is actually in use, in order to determine, not only Haitian 
needs, but Haiti's potential place in the agro-industrial world. I have a 
feeling that a lot of Haiti's potential land just isn't in use. As I drive, 
leaving Port-au-Prince towards the North, I see small gardens springing up to 
the left and the right of the road where there used to be none. It seems like 
mostly corn.
Perhaps the dried out land areas you find near Gonaives would be perfect for 
planting the trees Jaffe mentioned in her post; the prosopis (bayawond aka 
mesquite), a hearty multi-functional tree.
The timing may be perfect for an agronomist as President in Haiti. Wait a 
minute, we have one!!!!
